Can the Nuna Pipa Lite be used without the base?
No, the Nuna PIPA Lite, Nuna PIPA Lite LX, and Nuna PIPA Lite R cannot be used in a vehicle or aircraft without their included base.
A part of what makes these three models, the PIPA Lite, PIPA Lite R, and PIPA Lite LX Nuna's lightest weight infant car seats is the absence of seat belt paths.
Seat belt paths are plastic components on a car seat shell that create a path to route a vehicle seat belt, and using a seat belt path is the only way to install a car seat without its base. Nuna does make several models that can be installed without the base using a seat belt path, including one PIPA "Lite" version: the Nuna PIPA, Nuna PIPA RX, and Nuna PIPA Lite RX.

How do you travel with the Nuna PIPA Lite?
If you have a Nuna PIPA Lite, PIPA Lite R, or PIPA Lite LX, you will need to bring the car seat base with you when you travel.
Nuna makes a travel bag uniquely designed to fit the PIPA series infant car seats and their bases, the Nuna PIPA Series Travel Bag. For added peace of mind while traveling, Nuna includes a Boarding Pass extended 1 year warranty program with this travel bag when using with a Nuna PIPA car seat that is still under the manufacturer's warranty.
The Nuna PIPA Lite models are not FAA approved without their bases, so it will be most convenient to get a travel bag and check the car seat during air travel.
For an infant car seat that can be installed without its base in an aircraft, consider the Nuna PIPA, PIPA RX, or PIPA Lite RX.
