Eco-Friendly Stroller Options: Sustainable Choices for Environmentally Conscious Parents

In an era marked by increasing environmental awareness, the choices we make as consumers carry greater significance than ever before. For parents, this sentiment extends to the products they select for their little ones, with sustainability and eco-friendliness taking center stage. Enter the world of eco-friendly strollers, where innovation and environmental responsibility converge to provide conscientious parents with a range of options that align with their values.

In this article, we delve into the realm of sustainable strollers, shining a spotlight on three prominent brands that have embraced the ethos of eco-consciousness: Bumbleride, Nuna, and Bugaboo. These manufacturers have reimagined the traditional stroller, infusing it with innovative design, cutting-edge materials, and a commitment to reducing the carbon footprint. By exploring the unique features, manufacturing processes, and materials employed by these brands, we aim to empower environmentally conscious parents with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions and embrace a greener parenting journey.

Let’s take a look!

Bumbleride

Bumbleride Era being pushed in dirt

Bumbleride is a small, family run company out of San Diego that has been around since 2004. They are known for their eco friendly strollers geared towards parents living active lifestyles.

Bumbleride currently offers five environmentally friendly strollers: the Indie, Indie Twin, Era, Speed, and Ironman. All five strollers are designed for active parents, with the Speed and Ironman dedicated jogging strollers. The Indie and Indie Twin are the perfect compromise for parents who want a stroller that’s safe for jogging yet convenient for everyday use - they offer air-filled tires for running, yet aren’t as large and bulky as most jogging strollers. And the Era is their everyday stroller!

Bumbleride is one of the most eco-friendly stroller companies on the planet. Each stroller uses recycled water bottles to create the 100% recycled polyester fabrics used for most colors, as well as an innovative solution dye process that uses 89% percent less water.

These sustainable strollers are free of PFAS, fire retardants, PVC, BPA, phthalate and other chemicals. Fabrics are water-resistant, thanks to PFC-free durable water repellant, and plastic components are made from 25% recycled fishing nets.

Materials matter! Here is a detailed look at what materials Bumbleride uses, and the why behind them:

Nuna

Two Nuna MIXX Next being pushed on a flowery road

One of the most popular baby gear brands on the market is Nuna. Nuna is known for their beautiful, high quality, and durable products. But Nuna is also known for their eco-friendly baby gear and mindful manufacturing. Eight Nuna products have met the standards for GREENGUARD GOLD certification, meaning that they have been thoroughly tested and certified to not contribute hazardous chemicals, or VOCs, into the air your child breathes.

Nuna products are also free of PFAS, fire retardants, and other harmful chemicals. They use organic cotton that has been tested and approved in accordance with the OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which certifies that they are free from harmful and allergenic substances. Select Nuna products are also GOTS Certified. The aim of the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is to define requirements to ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labeling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer.  Other Nuna products use an environmentally friendly merino wool TENCEL lyocell blend that is soft and naturally controls moisture.

Nuna’s environmentally friendly strollers include: the TRVL, TRIV Next, TAVO Next, MIXX Next, and Demi Grow. Nuna offers a stroller for every purpose - a travel, compact stroller (TRVL); a mid-size (TRIV Next); a full size (TAVO Next and MIXX Next); and a convertible single to double (Demi Grow).

Bugaboo

Bugaboo Dragonfly being pushed in a city park

Another well known baby gear brand, Bugaboo, is making huge sustainability strides. They have pledged to push down to zero C02 emissions by 2035. As part of their efforts, by the end of 2023 all of their strollers will be manufactured using 100% recycled fabrics! They’ve also committed to participate in a circular economy - where strollers get second chances, and there are options to lease and purchase certified refurbished strollers to keep them running longer. Bugaboo has also started ditching single-use plastics from their packaging, and hope to fully eliminate single-use plastics from their production process by 2025.

Bugaboo is proud to be driving change towards a more sustainable future, and their strollers are produced with mass-balanced bio based material instead of fossil-based plastic. This game-changing innovation upcycles plant-based waste to give it a new life.

Bugaboo currently offers four eco friendly baby strollers: the Butterfly, Dragonfly, Fox 5, and Donkey 5. Just like Nuna, these four strollers cover your bases with a compact, travel size (Butterfly), mid-size (Dragonfly), full-size (Fox 5), and convertible double (Donkey 5).
