2022 UPPAbaby Mesa V2 vs. 2021 UPPAbaby Mesa Infant Car Seat Comparison

For the first time in its history, the UPPAbaby Mesa infant car seat is changing in its features and functionality—undergoing several upgrades that add both safety and comfort.

Note that the original UPPAbaby Mesa is now discontinued.

The UPPAbaby Mesa V2 offers sleek, new colors and new features like additional side impact protection, a larger sun canopy, a more secure seatbelt installation method and more.

UPPAbaby is also debuting a second model, the Mesa Max, featuring a new base with a load leg and anti-rebound panel to minimize movement in a crash. See the differences between models in this UPPAbaby Mesa Max vs. Mesa V2 comparison.

Both models are available for pre-order at Strolleria, with the Mesa V2 expected in September 2022 and the Mesa Max in October. The original Mesa, now discontinued, is in stock while inventory lasts.

In this comparison, we'll cover what's new for the 2022 UPPAbaby Mesa V2, compared with Mesa models from 2021-earlier.

2022 UPPAbaby Mesa V2 vs. 2021 UPPAbaby Mesa Price

With its added features, the UPPAbaby Mesa V2 carries a higher starting price point than the Mesa.

The UPPAbaby Mesa has two price points: a starting price point for the standard polyester blend fabrics and a higher price point for fashions with merino wool, a natural fabric that's more breathable, hypoallergenic and moisture-wicking.

The Mesa V2 offers three fashions at the same price point with polyester blend fabrics.

  • Mesa V2: $329.99
  • Mesa: $299.99 to $349.99

2022 UPPAbaby Mesa V2 vs. 2021 UPPAbaby Mesa Weight and Specifications

The Mesa V2 is unchanged in its size and weight compared with the Mesa, and both models can be used for approximately one year, depending on your baby's height.

One difference: The Mesa V2 has a redesigned infant insert that can be used until your baby reaches 11 pounds, compared with the 8-pound limit on the Mesa's insert. The new insert is more supportive for a newborn, with a curved shape and side wings designed to prevent slouching.

Because of the redesigned insert that simplifies the fit of the car seat for a newborn, the Mesa V2 now has one crotch buckle position, instead of the two positions that require an adjustment on the Mesa.

  • Mesa and Mesa V2: 4-35 pounds or up to 32" in height

  • Mesa: 4 to 8 pounds

2022 UPPAbaby Mesa V2 vs. 2021 UPPAbaby Mesa Canopy

The canopy on the UPPAbaby Mesa V2 is 20 percent larger than the previous model, offering more sun protection for your baby while you're out and about.

While the Mesa canopy extends to meet the handlebar of the car seat, the Mesa V2 canopy extends past the handlebar.

Both canopies are made from the same stretchy material and retract into the seat when not in use.

UPPAbaby Mesa V2 vs. UPPAbaby Mesa Safety Features

The headrest on the UPPAbaby Mesa V2 is now larger to provide better head containment and better side impact protection.

The handlebar on the V2 model now also functions as a safety feature. While the handlebar of the UPPAbaby Mesa includes three handlebar positions, the Mesa V2 adds a fourth position that acts as an anti-rebound bar. When installed in a car, the handlebar can be rotated toward the back of the vehicle seat, providing a counterbalance that can inhibit movement of the seat in a collision.

UPPAbaby Mesa V2 vs.  UPPAbaby Mesa Installation Methods

Both the UPPAbaby Mesa V2 and the UPPAbaby Mesa can be installed without the base if you're traveling or taking a taxi.

But the UPPAbaby Mesa V2 offers a new seatbelt-only installation method that's more secure than the method used to install the older Mesa without the base.

The Mesa V2 uses what's known as the European belt path, in which the seatbelt is routed through guides at both the front and back of the car seat.

The prior Mesa offers an American belt path, which consists of belt guides only on the front of the car seat.

UPPAbaby Mesa V2 vs. UPPAbaby Mesa Colors and Fabrics

The UPPAbaby Mesa V2 comes in three new fashions that match the color palette of the Vista and Cruz lines.

Additionally, all plastics on the Mesa V2 are now a darker charcoal, compared with a lighter gray on the Mesa—giving the car seat a more sleek and sophisticated look.

For the Mesa V2, all fabrics are free of flame-retardant chemicals, and all fashions have also achieved the Greenguard Gold certification for chemical emissions standards.

The headrest and insert on the Mesa V2 has mesh-like ventilation for added breathability and comfort.

The UPPAbaby Mesa V2 comes in three colors:

  • Stella Grey Melange
  • Jake Charcoal Black
  • Alice Dusty Pink

Strollers Compatible with UPPAbaby Mesa V2 and UPPAbaby Mesa

Like the Mesa, the UPPAbaby Mesa V2 is primarily designed for use with UPPAbaby strollers.

Both versions of the car seat attach to the UPPAbaby Vista and Cruz strollers without the need for adapters and disconnect with a one-handed push of a button. With the purchase of adapters, you can also use either Mesa on the UPPAbaby Minu compact stroller or the UPPAbaby Ridge jogging stroller.

UPPAbaby doesn't make adapters that allow the Mesa to fit any other brands' strollers, but a few manufacturers such as Thule and BOB offer adapters for their strollers.

Here are the strollers compatible with the UPPAbaby Mesa and Mesa V2 car seats:

  • UPPAbaby Vista / Vista V2
  • UPPAbaby Cruz / Cruz V2
  • UPPAbaby Minu (with adapter)
  • UPPAbaby Ridge (with adapter)
  • Baby Jogger City Mini 2 and City Mini GT 2 (with adapter now discontinued)
  • BOB single strollers (with adapter)
  • Mima Xari and Xari Sport (with adapter)

UPPAbaby Mesa V2 Compatibility with Older Strollers, Adapters and Bases

The UPPAbaby Mesa V2 fits all model years of UPPAbaby strollers, as well as all bases and car seat adapters.

The base for the Mesa V2 and Mesa is identical.

However, because of a change in the design of the shell, the Mesa V2 does not fit on the Mesa Max base.

UPPAbaby Mesa V2 Travel Bag

With the launch of the Mesa V2, UPPAbaby has also released a new TravelSafe travel bag.

The travel bag includes a fabric extension that can be unzipped if you're traveling with both the car seat and base. If you're taking only the carrier on your trip, you can keep the extension zipped so that the size of the bag is more compact.

Like the previous travel bag, the bag sells for $89.99 and include the option to enroll in UPPAbaby's TravelSafe program, which guarantees your product from damages during air travel.
